How To Setup Kiosk Mode in Windows

Kiosk mode is great feature that permits Microsoft Windows to give a solitary application to clients marking on as visitors or nonspecific approved clients while counteracting access to different records, information and usefulness of the working framework and PC.

Kiosk mode is to allow only one application to run. Users cannot have access to any other programs or applications other than they are assigned to. Kiosk mode is to secure Windows applications from all the users by allowing accessing a specific application to a particular user.



Whenever a user logged in, he/she can only access their dedicated application only. He / She cannot even know how many applications are there along with the one which they are operating. Kiosk mode is useful for POS (Point of Sale), restaurants. We can assign a specific part of the software to the employees. For example if we are running a restaurant, we will have different employees with different assignments. We can make the cashier to access only billing screen. Whenever a cashier logged in to the application he can access only Billing Screen. Let’s say your friends and relatives want to use email facility, then can create a guest account which redirects to only outlook or particular email service whenever a guest logged in, you can keep your other information secure in this way.

Now we will see how we can set up Kiosk mode in Windows. We need to make some changes in registries. We need to carefully edit the registry.

 Step 1: Click on Start and go to Run

 Step 2: Type regedit and click OK.

Step 3: Now you should browse registry by go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE — Software —                               Microsoft — Windows NT — CurrentVersion — Winlogon.

Step 4: Now enter the username you want to automatically log into by double clicking on                                 “DefaultUserName”

Step 5: Double-click the DefaultPassword entry, enter password for the user account you want to                     log into

Step 6: If you do not see DefaultPassword entry. Go to Edit — New — String Value.Name it as                         DefaultPassword and press Enter.

Step 7: Double click the entry and enter in the password for the user account you want to log into.                   Now Click OK

Step 8: Double click AutoAdminLogon and enter ‘1’ for in its value data then click OK

Step 9: If you do not see AutoAdminLogon then follow Step 6.

Step 10: Go to File — Exit and close the Registry Editor

 If you want to have a specific user account to boot into kiosk mode then follow the steps

Step 1: Click on Start and go to Run

Step 2: Type regedit and click OK.

Step 3: Now you should browse registry by go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE — Software — Microsoft — Windows NT — CurrentVersion — Winlogon.

Step 4: Go to Edit —> New —> String Value and name it as shell

Step 5: double click on the newly created and add the vale as the path of the application you want                   to  run. For ex: c:\myapplication;

Now logout from the account and login, you will see your custom application only
